General information – one of the most peaceful and elegant cichlid that exist in hobby, males have a beautiful hump on their head. Many fish keepers with huge tanks find this fish very attractive to keep. Common Name - Emerald Cichlid, Chocolate Cichlid. Scientific Name - Hypselecara temporalis. Family – Cichlidae. Origin - Brazil, South America. Size - up to 30 CM. (about 11 inches). First discovered - Gunther, 1862. Nutrition – Carnivore will accept pellet and flake food but needs their live food in order to thrive, insects and worms are his favorites. Behavior – Peaceful. Maintenance and care– requires minimum 80 gallon tank, as tank mates recommended to keep them with other none aggressive South American cichlids. The Chocolate Cichlid known to be very sensitive to water quality, make sure to have your tank water well filtered. The Hypselecara temporalis need plenty of open swimming space along with places to hide. Water Parameters – PH: 5.5-7.5, temperature: 77-86F (25-30C), DH: 1-20. Breeding – after couple made, they will laid about 1000 eggs on vertical surfaces such as flat rocks, when the fry hatch they will taken by the parent to hiding places (rock, cave )in order to protect them. Baby brine shrimp should be ideal food for the fry. Adult pairs are often poor parents during their first spawn but will become increasingly better at rearing their progeny as their experience also increases.
