General information – the Kingsizei is a dwarf Mbuna from Lake Malawi. The Kingsizei available in two variants the gold variant and the famous blue stripes variant. Unfortunately, the quality of the fish around in the shops today is not so high so if you want to have a pure, high quality Kingsizei you will need to look after wild fish. Common Name - Kingsizei Scientific Name – Cynotilapia (Pseudotropheus) pulpican Family – Cichlidae Origin – Likoma, Lake Malawi Size – up to 8 cm First discovered – Trewavas, 1935 Nutrition – herbivore.Vegetable or Spirulina based flake foods are ideal for this Mbuna. Due to its being herbivore other commercial foods can harm it.
Behavior - It can be quite territorial and aggressive (despite its small size) Maintenance and care - the Kingsizei needs to be kept in an Mbuna tank stocked with plenty of rocks as hiding places. should be kept with other Mbuna species with similar size and behavior. Best kept as a single male and at least 3 females. Perform water changes on a weekly basis and make sure to have well filtered water. Water Parameters – temperature: 24- 27, PH: 7.5- 8.2 Breeding - Like other Mbuna this is a maternal mouthbrooder. It takes about 25 days for fry to emerge once the mother starts holding eggs in her mouth. Fry should be fed crushed cichlid flake ,fry food or newly hatched brine shrimp.
