General information – the Lamprologus stappersi earned his name from Dr. Stappers whom collected the original fish from Lake Tanganica. Its common name Pearly Ocellatus is due to its being a member of the ocellatus group of shelldwellers. All over the stappersi's body there are a lot of white spots that look like pearls. Common Name - Pearly Ocellatus, Meleagris Shelldweller. Scientific Name - Lamprologus stappersi. Family- Cichlidae Origin – Africa, Lake Tanganyika. Size – 7cm (2.8 inches). First discovered- Pellegrin,1927. Photo by: Amir Levy Nutrition – carnivore, in nature the stappersi feed on worms, crustaceans and other invertebrates. In captivity they will accept flake, pellet and frozen food, live food,such as bloodworms, daphnia and cyclops are recommended. Behavior – semi aggressive, this species is quite aggressive for a shelldweller. Maintenance and care – 70 liters minimum for a couple. The substrate should be sandy. Also need lots of shells for a place to live and breed. Water changes and well filtered water are essential. Water Parameters – PH: 8-8.4, temperature: 24c-28c (75f-82f), DH: 8-20. Breeding – Shelldwellers, the couple will spawn in an empty shell and will both defend on the eggs and the fry,the fry became free swimmers after ten days.
